WHY IS THE 90-DAY NOVEL TELECOURSE “PAY WHAT YOU CAN?”
I’ve taught the 90-Day Novel workshop for hundreds of writers over the past ten years. I’ve been told by some that the workshop has changed their life, that they’d been stalled for ten years on a project and this workshop got them to the end. I’ve been told by memoirists that the workshop finally gave them a coherent narrative, even closure on relationships they were never able to make sense of.
I’m always gratified to hear this. But here’s the thing: most writers aren’t rich, and some, especially ones in their early twenties are just getting started and could use some help.
I’ve always kept the price low, but I still hear from some writers that even $445 for a live twice-a-week, three-month workshop exceeds their budget. When it comes to cost, writing is the most democratic art form – you need a pen and paper. So, this is an experiment in democratizing the cost of the workshop as well.
The suggested price is still $445, and I trust that if you can afford it you will pay it. But if you’ve ever had the dream to write a novel or memoir and don’t have the means to take a workshop that will guide you through the process in a clear, concise way, that will support you in developing a method that will lead you to the end of your first draft . . . now you do.
If you think because it’s “pay what you can,” that it can’t be worth much, please read the testimonials and look at the track record: at last count, over eighty 90-day novel alumni have been published, and (because the universe has a sense of humor) some have found success as TV and film writers and have credited the workshop with giving them a foundation in craft.
When we put process ahead of results, the results speak for themselves.
One last thing. The workshop is “pay what you can,” but it isn’t free. And even if I could afford to make it free, which I can’t, I wouldn’t. Here’s why: in the past, I have, on occasion, offered full scholarships to writers in need, and guess what: They never finished the course! If you don’t have skin in the game, you won’t be committed, which is why there is a $100 minimum.
The 90-Day Novel sounds like a romantic notion, even a cool marketing concept, but its actually hard work. I am going to nudge you to dig deep, to let go of fixed ideas and explore the truth of your premise. There will be days of euphoria and days of doubt. But you will not be alone. You will be working shoulder to shoulder with your fellows on this journey (virtually, of course, it’s a tele-course) and I will be guiding you every step of the way.
Your voice matters. The world wants to hear what you have to say, in spite of your doubt and perhaps even because of it.
The workshop is now “pay what you can.” There are no more excuses.
I look forward to working with you.
Your fellow writer,
