90 day novel online - Al
Al Watt
Creative Director, LA Writers Lab

Hi, and welcome to the 90-Day Novel Online. If you have ever tried writing a novel, only to feel bogged down and frustrated halfway through, or if you have thought to yourself that this is something you would love to do, but you’re not sure how to proceed… I can help.

Almost as soon as I began teaching the 90-Day Novel Workshop in Jan. 2007, I started to receive emails from around the country, wanting to know if I offered the workshop online. After two years of preparation, I am now ready to offer a comprehensive workshop to the online community.

The goal is simple. Write the first draft of your novel in 90 days.

90 day novel onlineHere’s how it works. As soon as you sign up, you receive a welcome letter that includes a series of stream-of-consciousness writing exercises and a booklet that explains the process of getting the story from your imagination onto the page. You can begin immediately writing on the exercises and ‘imagining the world of your story’.

And then, starting on Day 1 we will begin our once a week 90-minute sessions, which will be conducted by teleconference. If, for some reason, you miss the class, it will be available all week long by simply dialing the number you will be emailed prior to the commencement of the workshop.

"I went $64,000 in debt for my MFA in fiction writing.
I sit in this class and I wonder why. This is a great class!"

Frank B. Wilderson III (WINNER of the 2008 American Book Award for his memoir Incognegro)
Each 90-minute lesson involves a lecture, three or four stream-of-consciousness writing exercises, and finally, I will work with a few of you, one on one, to illustrate the principles that have been discussed. I want to be clear that I don’t ever ‘impose’ my idea of what I think one’s story should be. My job is to facilitate the writer in finding the story that lives within. There are no rules to writing a novel. There is no ‘right way’ or ‘wrong way’ to tell a story, but through this process I can help you in bypassing your ‘idea’ of your story, in order to connect to the truth of your story. I am going to teach you story structure, not as a formula, but as something that can contain anything your imagination can conjur.

"Al sends out the perfect signals to get you to the end of your novel!"
Donna Powers (screenwriter of Paramount Pictures’ The Italian Job)
There is a group page for the writers, so that we can share our daily experiences with each other, the ups and down, while also logging in our daily page count in order to hold ourselves accountable for our work. (Remember, our only job as artists is to create a body of work).

You will also receive a daily letter keeping you connected to the process. I have developed these letters over many years, not only to address most of the fears and concerns that often arise, but also to give clear and concise instruction on how best to stay connected to your story.

"The daily emails are absolutely worth the price of admission. A friendly nudge, a pithy insight, a gentle reminder of our commitment, a powerful blast of insight: all serve to boost our flagging morale, or comb out our confusion, or intercede in the bitter fight with our creative impulses."
Mary Shannon (Professor of Creative Writing, Cal State Northridge)
There will also be a 50 minute weekly Q&A roundup on Friday afternoons at 4pm. Al will answer any questions you may have, while giving direct feedback to you on your story. These questions will be made available in the permanent 90-Day Novel library. (By asking a question, you are agreeing to be in the library).

Writing a novel in 90 days is a thrilling undertaking, and it is also hard work. I recommend giving your self two hours a day to accomplish this task.
